Behind every smiling child chasing a soccer ball and every family gathered at a community event lies a web of unseen struggles. Recreation programs look effortless from the outside --- fields full of laughter, gyms buzzing with energy, parents cheering from the sidelines. But as someone who lives in this world everyday, both as a recreation director and as a mom and wife, I know the truth: keeping these programs alive takes far more than whistles and scoreboards.

Balancing Budgets and Dreams

Every season begins with hope --- new uniforms, fresh schedules, eager kids ready to play. But behind that hope is a budget that never seems big enough. I've sat at my desk late at night, staring at spreadsheets, trying to decide whether to repair an aging basketball hoop or expand a program that's already overflowing with interest.

As a mom, those decisions hit differently. I know what it feels like to watch my own kids light up when they discover a sport they love. I also know the disappointment when opportunities are limited because resources simply aren't there. It's a constant tug-of-war between dreams and dollars.

Staffing Shortages and Volunteer Reliance

Programs thrive on people --- coaches, referees, volunteers. But finding them and keeping them, is never easy. Many are juggling jobs, families and commitments of their own. I've lost count of the times I've stepped in with a clipboard, filing in as a coach because no one else could. My kids have watched me sprint from one field to another, trying to make sure every team has the support they need.

It's exhausting, yes. But it's also a reminder of the dedication required to keep these programs running. Sometimes the most heroic acts in recreation aren't on the field --- they're in the quiet sacrifices made by those who show up.

Inclusivity and Safety

Recreation isn't just about play; it's about belonging. I've worked hard to make sure programs welcome children of all abilities, background and financial situations. That means intentional planning, training, and sometimes tough conversations.

Safety is another layer of responsibility. From concussion protocols to facility maintenance, I carry the weight of protecting every participant. As a wife and mom, I understand the trust families place in us. It's not just about games --- it's about safe guarding their loved ones.

Community Expectations

Every parent, coach, and athlete brings expectations. Some want highly competitive leagues, others want casual fun. Balancing those desires is like walking a tightrope. I've had parents ask why their child's team isn't winning more, while others thank me for creating a space where their child feels included regardless of skill level.

The truth is, recreation programs are about more than trophies. They are about building character, resilience and community --- Values that sometimes get overshadowed by the scoreboard.

Resilience, Creativity, and Heart

Despite the challenges, recreation programs endure because of resilience, creativity, and heart. Directors stretch budgets, volunteers step up, families rally together. I've seen communities come alive when a new program launches, and I've witnessed the quiet victories when a child who once felt left out finally finds their place on a team.

These moments remind me why the work matters. They fuel the long nights, the tough decisions, and the endless balancing act.

A Vision for the Future

If communities want recreation programs to thrive, they must recognize the hidden challenges and step forward with support. That means advocating for funding, volunteering times, and valuing inclusivity over competition. Recreation isn't a luxury --- it's a vital part of community health and family life.

Behind every smiling child and every cheering family is a network of leaders, parents and volunteers working timelessly to make it possible. With greater awareness and collective effort, we can ensure that recreation continues to be a source of joy, growth and connection for generations to come.

Hey sweetheart...

It's late and all of you are sleeping while I type this up. You are all small right now but there are a few things I want to make sure that you know in life.

1.) Always put God first. There will be things that come up that try to steal your attention but don't let them. When you wake up first thing in the morning, pray and read The Word. Spend your whole day talking to God. If you are having a hard day, talk to him. If you are having a good day, talk to him. If you are running late, don't stress it -- talk to him. If you are early, thank him. Clearly my point is -- Just talk to him. He's in every little moment of your life. He knows what is going to happen before you do. And sometimes those things that seem like the end of the world... Well, they can lead to some of the most beautiful things. Trust in Him.

2.) You are absolutely INCREDIBLE. No seriously you are. God made you to be exactly who you are for a reason. You were sent here at this particular time because God knew that the World needed someone just like you. You will change lives. Make sure you use that for good.

3.) Look for the beauty in the small things. There will be so many things that this world will want to convince you is beautiful... But don't be mislead. True beauty is what is inside of someone. Not the outside. I want you to see the natural beauty around you. Both in people and in the world. Pay attention to the everyday little moments. Go out and experience Nature. When you are out and about in town, pay attention to the beautiful souls all around you that God sends into our lives -- sometimes in the form of a stranger. When you are older pay attention to those smiles and snuggles from your little ones. Those are the things that really matter.

4.) Use your imagination. Never lose that ability. Anything is possible. Don't ever let anyone tell you differently.

5.) Ask tough questions. Don't be afraid to do the hard work and do your own research into things. Don't just take someones word for anything. Even with the world at your fingertips, read books, seek out different perspectives ... Do a deep dive. Don't be afraid to go down the rabbit hole sometimes and then allow the Holy Spirit to Guide you. If you allow God to guide you, you will know what is right from what is wrong.

6.) Allow yourself to know what it feels like to be truly loved. I hope that your dad and I will be two people who make you feel that love -- but also, don't be afraid to get your heart broken a few times to find that one person that God has waiting just for you. Sometimes it takes learning what you don't want and being let down by people to realize what you do want and to find the one person who will do everything they can to never let you down. There will be people who will try to change you, those are not your people - just know that the right person won't try to change you... They will love you and all your imperfections.

7.) Love everyone. You don't always have to agree with peoples decisions. Everyone has their own story. Remember that " Jesus picked 12 outsiders no body would have chosen and he changed the world." If there is one thing that I have cherished in this life, it's that you should never judge a book by its cover.  You will find some friendships in some of the most peculiar of people. Cherish those.

8.) Sometimes people just need you to listen. It can be hard not to voice your own opinions, but sometimes they just need to make their own decisions and have someone to talk to and who will give them a hug. Know when they need you to talk and when they just need you to listen. That is one of the best traits you will ever acquire. Also, don't take everything that someone says personal-- we all have bad days. They may just be frustrated and venting -- Just let them do it. You don't have to let it ruin your day.

9.) Which leads me to my next piece of advice -- Respect Yourself. There will be those people in life who you can never please. There will be people who don't like you -- and they don't even know why they don't like you. That's their problem not yours. Know when to talk away. You will find your tribe -- and when you do, they will be unlike anyone you have ever met. They will want only good things for you -- and you will feel the exact same way about them. The world becomes a much more beautiful place when you surround yourself with people like that.

10.) You are never alone. Even when the world tries to make you think that you are -- You aren't. I mean obviously your dad and I are always here for you... not to mention your other family members. But MOST IMPORTANTLY, as I said before -- God is always there. He can do some truly incredible things if you just trust and believe in him. I mean, look at my life. He has completely changed my life in ways I never thought possible.

11.)  You will most likely do some really stupid stuff when you are younger. We all have. And if someone tries to tell you they haven't.... well then.. they are probably lying or lived a really boring life. You only live once so make the memories... Don't be afraid. Obviously try to use your head as much as possible. But know that there is nothing in this world that you could do that would make me love you any less. I want to hear about your adventures and I hope you trust me enough to share them with me.

12.) Accidents Happen. In every aspect of your life, you will experience this. There will be things out of your control. But, God put a good head on your shoulder. Know what you can and can not control -- and then don't sweat the small stuff.

13.) Always tell the truth. Even when you are tempted not to... It's always better if you do.

14.) Your dad and I are always a phone call away - No questions asked. We want you to feel like in those moments when you are scared or even in the moments that you just need someone that you will have the feeling " I need to call my parents..." not "my parents are going to kill me..." Because like I said above, there is nothing that you could do that would make us love you any less.

15.) Don't text and drive. Don't Drink and Drive. EVER. Period. It is NOT worth it.

16.) Always Drive Yourself. If you can't, call mom, dad or a sibling. I can't tell you how many sticky situations I have gotten myself into riding with someone else. You are in control of what you are and are not exposed to when you have the ability to remove yourself from a situation.

17.)

I'm sure there will be many more and I will keep adding on as I think of them... But here is a start.

Love you,

Mom

Dear Parents with Virtual Students,

Yes, I am talking to you. I see you.

I see the way you struggle to juggle work, a household and daily responsibilities, having infants/ toddlers in the home, sorting through the 5000 daily emails from Teachers and Admins... while trying to keep up with the multiple logins for apps, emails, the different codes for Google Meets - the different platforms and links that will sometimes work, but then sometimes not.

I see you are overwhelmed, stressed and feeling inadequate. I know you have that feeling that you should be doing more. I see you struggling with feeling as though your children are missing out while also worrying that they will be falling behind in their education. I see you running back and forth every couple of minutes, all day long,  between your kids - while trying to cover new materials, check in on progress, help with school work and technology difficulties. I see you trying to find ways to help your children connect with their classmates.

I see you running around like a chicken with their head cut off trying to pick up the messes from your little ones in between all the school chaos. I see the meltdowns from younger siblings not understanding why their older siblings can't play with them.

I see the parents who have been humbled by this experience - gaining a new perspective and appreciation for their children's teachers. Teaching is definitely not for the faint of heart. I always message my friend and family who are teachers and tell them, I don't know how they do it. I have 4 children of my own, and struggle. I don't know how they do it with 20-30 children.
I see your frustration when technology isn't working properly. I see the struggle of wondering if you should upgrade your internet to handle the bandwidth that you need to school multiple children online. I see you rushing back and forth between your children, trying to help with what they need while also trying to give them the space to learn and to grow independently. I see the confusion in your face when your children can't remember what assignments they were supposed to be doing. I understand your frustration when you think that your children have completed their assignments only to log in and see there are still 20 assignments due for the week. I see as you try to encourage your children to focus to get them done, all while still trying to get things done that you need to.

I see you, trying to help your child with a short attention span learn to focus. I know it can be frustrating, when they are easily distracted.  I see you... The Parents who are watching as this process breaks down your child mentally to the point of tears. You can see them stressing and overwhelmed... You grab them in your arms and hug them, while also crying because you know all too well that stress that they are feeling.

I see the parents who are working but are still trying to be there for their children. You're hard work and concern don't go unnoticed. It may not feel like it, but I promise your kiddos are so grateful for all that you do for them... To keep a roof over their heads, food in their bellies and the comfort of a happy home.

At the end of the day, when the kids are fed, bathed, and in bed - I also see the parents who are exhausted. The ones who are suffering from migraines. The ones who don't have time to themselves to decompress. The Parents who love their children so much - but also know that they need their own time and space.  I see the late hours that you put in when the house is all quiet, so that you can get done what you have needed to get done all day but weren't able to.
I just want you to remember, you are not alone... If you need someone to talk to, vent to, cry to... I am here. I hear you. I see you. I am here to validate you and your feelings.
You don't have to carry the weight of the world and it's chaos on your shoulders. It's okay to feel overwhelmed, it's okay to feel all the feelings that you are feeling. This is the new normal for us, right now. You can't shoulder the full responsibility. Have faith in your teachers, they know what they are doing.

It's impossible to be everything to everybody all of the time. So please, take it easy on yourself. If you or your child is struggling - take that break. You can always message your child's teacher and let them know what is going on.

We are all in this craziness together.  Don't panic. Encourage yourself and your children to do the best that they can at that moment. There will be things that are not in your control. Let them go. Don't stress it. You are doing the best that you know how - with the cards that you have been given. You are doing great. And if you need a "reset" take it. You both will become more resilient in the long run. Know your limits. Listen to your body. Take a deep breath and know that I am right here, cheering you on! You got this! And if you are having a hard day, I am only a DM away.

Netflix is a wonderful resource to use for educational learning. While not only can you turn on the subtitles to help your children learn to read faster (A Tip from a good friend...) - There are endless movies / videos that teach about every subject. Here are a few of our favorites.

PS - I do not own these logos or trademarks. I use only for the main purpose of providing a list of videos for education from these two websites/services.

PLEASE BE ADVISED TO LOOK AT THE RATINGS. SOME ARE BETTER FOR OLDER CHILDREN.
